Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Family Tree Maker 6 Comment: I got the 2005 edition of this product to begin with and was dazzled by the many features and varieties of ways to collect and manage family histories. This newest edition is that much more slick looking and user-friendly. The other added bonus was that 2006 came with a 180-days free access to Ancestry.com, whereas I got only 15 days with the 2005 edition. I also was able to upgrade to FTM 16 through the online website. Customer Rating: Summary: Family Tree Maker Standard Comment: I found the program software very helpful in organizing information about ancestors. It is not clear what the 180 days free access buys you. At first it was frustrating to see all the locked records. However, after I had signed up for the free 14 day trial, I was amazed at the information available online. After having dabbled in writing down my ancestors from personal interviews with grandparents, this program helped me advance in the knowledge of our ancestros by several generations in a few days. This can be addicting. Customer Rating: Summary: Worth Every Penny Comment: I haven't tried any other similar software, so I have nothing to compare this to, but I can't imagine ANY software being better. This has opened a whole new world to me. Before buying Family Tree Maker I had records back to about 1840. After using the software, and the included access to Ancestry.com, I've traced one line back to 1650!! I keep finding new, time saving, and very helpful things that this program will do! I also bought the Official Guide to Family Tree Maker which is fine, but unnecessary! By the time I check the book to see what it has to add, I've already figured it out just playing around with the program. Customer Rating: Summary: Many great features, but it has bugs Comment: I upgraded to Family Tree Maker 2006 some months ago, but about two months ago, I ran into a problem when creating "Descendant Tree - Standard" in "Book Layout." I get the error message: "You have selected a combination of styles or items to include that do not allow a paginated tree to be formatted properly." I can still do the non-paginated (custom) version of the decendant tree, but that's not workable for printing in a Book. I called tech support and they spent quite some time with me; the tech stepped me through and checked everything possible and verified that there were absolutely no settings I had done that should create this problem. He even had me email a gedcom of my file to him (a much smaller version of the file since the Book and the images are no longer there) and the problem still existed, for me and for him. He acknowledged this was a bug and said he would submit my file and the problem to their tech people, but essentially he told me not to hold my breath on a solution. Just great! I've spent hundreds of hours creating my file and Book. I did find I could get around this problem by using "Hourglass Tree - Standard" instead, however, it takes forever to generate a large tree. Now I'm getting an error on creating an Outline Descendant report. This one says "You have selected a combination of styles that are too large for this page size. Some information may not print. Family Tree Maker will fit as much as possible by adjusting the indentation and font size." Baloney! I've run this report in the past and went back to the earliest generation (13) and had no problem. Now I can only display two generations and then I get this message. As soon as I go to the 3rd generation, I get the error message. It still displays the report, but it changes the font sizes to size 6. I'm very disappointed in these bugs in Family Tree Maker and the unresponsiveness of the company in fixing these. Due to these problems, I've recently thought about changing to another genealogy program, but in reading online reviews, FTM seems to be rated the best for charts. Are there other genealogy programs anyone would recommend and that can also access my Ancestry.com subscription? Where I can create a Book? That has all the features of Family Tree Maker? Customer Rating: Summary: User Friendly and Lots of Features Comment: I have never used a family tree software before, so when I decided to start putting my tree together I did some research and chose this one. So far, I have not been disappointed. It is very user friendly. There are many options in terms of generating reports and trees. Inputting the data is very easy. I have not had a chance to use many of features, so I can't really give it 5 stars yet. More Reviews
