Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: biased Comment: I hope this review is helpful to you. Please do not mark it as unhelpful merely because of the low number of stars I assigned it. This book is filled with essays from a wide variety of people. I did not have to read each section for my class but read a great deal of the book. Many of the sections of this book that I read I found to be very biased and to present race and multicultural issues in a way that is likely to increase racism and prejudice. Chances are that if you are getting this book it is due to being in a class that requires it. It is likely that your assessment will be different then my own. I would ask that you look at the statements in this book with an open mind and that you consider the following question. Will believing the things written in this book help people be more understanding of other cultures regardless of their own or is there anyway in which it could actually increase distrust and dislike towards other ethnic groups? Consider how people from a variety of ethnic groups would react to the information in this book if they read and believed it. The histories and backgrounds in each chapter are brief and general at best. There is no concrete info provided on counseling families...my advice is to find another textbook because this one doesn't give anything more than the very, very basics. I have found it to be extremely helpful in getting to know a little more about some of cultural belief of the client I've been working with. I have also gotten their individual perspectives from just asking them a little about their cultural belief systems as they interupt them for themselves. If you are familiar with psychological or counseling terminology it is an easy read as well.
