Editorial Reviews: This American portrait focuses on three generations of Rockefellers: John D., his son Junior, and his grandson Nelson. Manchester traces John D.'s influence on his family: his philanthropy, his fundamentalist religion, his hard-headed business sense, and his dislike of publicity.

"Well researched...filled with perceptive and quotable comments...presents a generally admiring account of the royal family of United States capitalism." (Chicago Sunday Tribune)

Manchester began his career as a writer of fiction. But a chance conversation with John F. Kennedy changed his direction. Kennedy told him, "In turbulent times people are interested in events, not in parables of them."

Comment: This is obviously one of Manchester's earlier productions. It really doesn't sound like Manchester at all. I was very surprised because I like Mr. Manchester.
I kept reading and turning each page expecting the book to begin in that shocking, startling, exciting Manchester way. It never happened.
But nevertheless it was interesting to read as a typical Rockefeller bio. It contains the basics - nothing shocking or controversial. It is the same old same old.
Compared to Manchester's later work this hardly seem to be the same author.
