After reading through several excellent choices, I finally settled on Everything Family Tree by Kimberly Powell. The layout and format is very easy to follow and the writing is friendly, professional, and easy to understand. It covers every genealogy topic I can think of, including surname origins and DNA testing, plus research in all of the major record types.
