Editorial Reviews:
A stunning successor to his best selling novel Peace Like a River , Leif Enger’s new work is a rugged and nimble story about an aging train robber on a quest to reconcile the claims of love and judgment on his life, and the failed writer who goes with him. In 1915 Minnesota, novelist Monte Becket has lost his sense of purpose. His only success long behind him, Monte lives simply with his wife and son. But when he befriends outlaw Glendon Hale, a new world of opportunity and experience presents itself. Glendon has spent years in obscurity, but the guilt he harbors for abandoning his wife, Blue, over two decades ago, has lured him from hiding. As the modern age marches swiftly forward, Glendon aims to travel back to his past--heading to California to seek Blue’s forgiveness. Beguiled and inspired, Monte soon finds himself leaving behind his own family to embark for the unruly West with his fugitive guide. As they desperately flee from the relentless Charles Siringo, an ex-Pinkerton who’s been hunting Glendon for years, Monte falls ever further from his family and the law, to be tempered by a fiery adventure from which he may never get home.

Customer Rating: Summary: I am not expert but this book is just perfection.....Comment: If somone would be so kind as to give me the rules for writing a book review, I will gladly read and follow them because I SOOO want to give this book the absolute love it deserves. The tale begins in 1915 when Monte, a writer suffering serious writer's block after having written a very successful novel, receives the invitation of a life time from a friend, Glendon, who needs to reunite himself with Blue, his old lover with whom he lives to make ammends. Even Monte's wife thinks her husband needs this great fun and encourages him to go! And so they are off on a westbound train and no sooner are they seated in the dining car when Glendon is recognized by a "Pinkerton." Glendon never quite told Monte much about his work which by the way had been ROBBING TRAINS for the last fifteen years. I don't want to spoil the coming adventures but there are a plenty and this book FLOWS with beautifully chosen prose and painfully accurate descriptions. Reading this book is just a joy. I gave it to my dad for his birthday but then I started reading it that day, I told him I would have to stick it in the mail this week! If you books like Plainsong, or Water for Elephants, you will love this book.Customer Rating: Summary: Not For MeComment: I greatly enjoyed Mr. Enger's first novel, "Peace Like A River". I started this book with great anticipation. The characters were colorful and seemed to jump off the page. But I found the plot twists a bit too contrived. I put the book down about half way thru and have tried returning to it several times without success.Customer Rating: Summary: The End of the Old WestComment: This is my first Leif Enger novel and I was not disappointed and has a little bit everything for everyone. We have Monte Beckett, a so called writer who wrote a great book, but now has writer's block. He meets the strange and mysterious man named Glendon, forms not only a friendship when helping Glendon build a boat, but then decides to take off and the story is off and running as Glendon tries to make peace with himself while still running from Charlie Siringo, an aging Pinkerton detective, who's been on Glendon's trail for years.
I'm not exactly sure what the author was trying to portray here. Was Monte living out that second novel that just wouldn't come and we are part of the story? Was this actually the authors dream and his problems with writers block?
Regardless, I liked the story, loved the way the author narrated it and my only negative was that it did drag in a few places, thus the 4 star rating.
Higly recommended, especially to those who love Larry McMurty or Cormac McCarthyCustomer Rating: Summary: It's all about friendship ....Comment: Leif Enger has created another interesting, if not great novel about people. Mr. Enger chose to place his characters in the West and to make them cowboys of sorts. He could have made them spacemen on Mars and still succeeded with this story of friendship, how it evolves, how it endures. All of his characters, from the narrator to even those who may occupy only a few pages are well-crafted. Except for the bad guy who gets eaten by the snapping turtle (no, that's not a spoiler), they are all good folks that you'd be pleased to have at your Thanksgiving dinner table. The mysticism of Mr. Enger's first novel plays no part in this story, a classic 'road' book that you will enjoy for its easy prose, but more so for its cast of characters.Customer Rating: Summary: Intriguing Novel from Talented AuthorComment: The unlikey hero of Leif Enger's novel really resonated with me - who hasn't dreamed of writing the Great American Novel...or some form of it. What creative person hasn't worried that success will be followed by endless failure? Becket's journey to discover new meaning in his life with outlaw Glendon Hale - and a motley cast of characters - is masterfully drawn by Leif Enger.
