Editorial Reviews: CliffsAP study guides help you gain an edge on Advanced Placement* exams. Review exercises, realistic practice exams, and effective test-taking strategies are the key to calmer nerves and higher AP* scores.

CliffsAP European History is for students who are enrolled in AP European History or who are preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination in this area. AP programs in European History cover important themes in European History from 1450 to the present. With the test-taking strategies, clear explanation of the exam format, a look at how exams are graded, and three full practice tests, this study guide can help students get ready to show what they know about how the following themes help shape the world in which we live:

  • Intellectual and cultural history
  • Political and diplomatic history
  • Social and economic history

Sample questions (and answers!) and practice tests reinforce what you’ve learned in topics such as the Renaissance, the Age of Imperialism, and the Cold War. CliffsAP European History also includes information on the following:

  • The English and Catholic Reformations
  • The rise of Constitutionalism in England
  • The Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment
  • Mercantilism and the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions
  • World Wars I and II
  • The collapse of Communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe

This comprehensive guide offers a thorough review of key concepts and detailed answer explanations. It’s all you need to do your best — and get the college credits you deserve.

Summary: European History (Cliffs AP)
Comment: Book is a text book for some type of school. Relates little to past history of Europe. Doesn't belong in the category of "European History. I should not have bought it and threw it away.

Summary: Don't get this one, it's not worth it
Comment: I became familiar with all three major books on this subject while studying (Cliffs, Princeton Review, & Kaplan) and this one is the worst. Its 2002 publication date is fatally old for a book that is supposed to cover a constantly morphing test, and most importantly, the practice exams in the back are WAY too easy.

The summaries are good, but for your money, you might as well get one of the other two, since they have better practice tests. Princeton did it for me personally; they also have a good breakdown of how you need to take the test itself.

I implore you not to waste your money here, at least until they publish an updated version.

Summary: CLIFFS=5
Comment: I used this book as my main study guide for the AP European history test in 2008 and I got a 5! It is truly the single best review book out there. I also owned Baarons, REA, and princeton review, but this was the best one information wise. REA is way to long and alot of the information is very very unnecessary and too detailed. Baarons is to brief and has to little detail. Princeton was pretty good but not as good as Cliffs. Cliffs has the best review. The review covers pretty much everything and in a good amount of detail. Just to let you know, the practice tests in cliffs book are horrible and princeton has the best practice tests so use theirs. Anyway, if you only have enough time for 1 book use cliffs and if u are really dedicated Princeton is also pretty good so read that as well for a second perspective. But I would recommend to read princeton only if you have read cliffs at least 3-4 times if not, just stick with cliffs and it will really help you. Good Luck!

Summary: The best review book
Comment: This review book is excellent for many reasons. Its review itself is straight-forward to read and is presented in a way that is not boring. While I would fall asleep reading Princeton Review, I was able to focus on the text and review well. The way the author bolded important events and people was also extremely helpful. There are also 10 multiple choice questions at the end of every section that help you see if you have understood what was just covered. The practice tests were somewhat easier than the actual test, but with a good teacher, you will be able to practice real tests. Each question of the practice multiple-choice tests is explained in depth, which is extremely helpful. The practice essay section was weak because the essay topics were not as in depth or specific as the actual exam. Essay examples were also lacking and because of the weak essay section in this review book, I went to Princeton Review's review book.
Cracking the AP European History Exam, 2006-2007 Edition (College Test Prep)

I highly recommend this book. It is truly the best review book I have seen, ever. I wish I had used this throughout the school year in my class instead of a month before the AP. I recommend reviewing with this book, with the Princeton Review European History review book as a supplement for the essay section (Although, in my opinion, if you cannot write essays, there is no hope for you anyhow in any review books. Your best bet is to read as many successful DBQs and FRQs as possible [examples can be given to you by your teacher] and get a feel for how to write them. That way is the best way to learn how to write good DBQs and FRQs).

If you are interested, I received a 5, which I credit to a solid score from the multiple-choice section (as in, this review book helped very much) and DBQ.
