What a great writer. I have always enjoyed Mr Raab's pieces in the New York Times. I am going to
read more of his books now.

Worth the time to read this huge book
Comment:
I really enjoyed this history of the five New York Mafia families. It is very well written. It is a
very lengthy book but if you have any interest in the Mafia you will not care. I would recommend
this to anyone who wants to get an overview of the Mafia's history and how their "rackets" work.
Saab also does an excellent job of giving the good guys (the cops and prosecutors) the attention
they deserve. Usually they are merely mentioned by other authors but Saab makes them as interesting
as the mafioso.

Definitive History of the Mafia
Comment:
I don't usually read books about crime, however as a native New Yorker, I've long been curious about
the extent to which nefarious forces have had an influence on the city's political, economic and
cultural environments. `Five Families' has more than satisfied my curiosity.
With
remarkable detail Raab comprehensively traces the history of the Mafia from the first Italian
immigrants who came to New Orleans to the recent `Mafia cops' court case. At times Raab can be
verbose, nevertheless, his work is well researched, highly informative, and most of all, engrossing.
Raab does well to represent a Mafia stripped of the romanticism that is often portrayed in the
media. One can be fascinated with the staggering amount of power Cosa Nostra possessed at its
zenith, however, Raab never lets you forget that it's an organization built on murder, greed and
brutality.
There are many lessons to learn from understanding the machinations of the
Mafia and how state and federal agencies evolved in response. `Five Families' is an enjoyable read
particularly for those who to like to learn about New York and wish to gain insights into
Machiavellian power.
